Ward's Nickname Page
This page is for posting of the nicknames that Ward bestowed upon
his "kids". So if everyone that has a nickname, including the story
behind it [if there was one], would kindly email it to the Weird
Webmonster at
oleweirdward@yahoo.com, we'll get it posted.

FYI......Let it be known that Ward wants everyone to realize that if he
didn't bestow a nickname on you, it's not because he cared for you
any less. He said nicknames were randomly given, for a variety of
reasons, and not everyone got one. Fear not if you didn't get one as
a student though, as Ward is still handing them out. Case in point;
"The Twisted Sisters", aka Jan and Robin LeMoine.
Debbie McNeely "McFeelie" - Class of '78

Greetings Weird Ward and B.O.B.

I was trying to recall how I received the name of McFeelie...
as I remember it, one day Mr. Ward was recounting part of an
episode of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood - and began talking of
the postman from that show - a "Mr. McFeelie" - and like a
lightbulb going off (or turning on in this situation) - I went from
Debbie McNeely to just plain "McFeelie". I have carried it
proudly. About 5+ years ago, I went back to school for my RN
and upon walking across the stage to receive my degree, a
bellar from the audience sounded out for all to hear - "Yeah
McFeelie!" Here I was at 40 years old and grinning from ear
to ear - it was "Bat Eyes" in the audience cheering me on.
Thanks be to you Mr. Ward for the nickname and SOOOOO
much more!

With much love and continuing admiration - McFeelie

Charlie Stevens / Anne Hall - Class of '78

I was "Cheerful Charlie". My wife Anne
Hall was "Weird Annie". I also recall that
he named classes. We were in first hour
and were called the "Twilight Zone".
Kelly Lawrence Flindt - Class of '77

Nicknamed "Lung" because I talked too much.

Hey, Weird Ward! It was good to see you at
Savoy's - next time I'll treat you to breakfast!
My son couldn't believe you'd remember who
I was but I guess with the nickname "Lung"
you probably wouldn't forget the loudest
mouth in '77. I probably didn't ever shut up
long enough to hear what you were saying in
class!! Isn't it funny....I teach Science now
and I definitely have several "lungs" for
students! What goes around, comes around.
Kristi Schleicher Wallace - Class of '77

"Inspector Clouseau"

Kari Schleicher Ryan - Class of '77

"Schnauzer"
Teri Marrs-Nichols - Class of '78

"Bat Eyes"

The first day of school I was sitting at the back of the room in
chemistry class. (By the way, that's where the Bottom of the
Barrel sat.) Being very "near sighted" I guess I was squinting.
Weird Ward asked me why I was making such a face and I
told him that I couldn't read the overhead projector. When he
asked me why, I said, "Because, I have bad eyes." With shock
and dismay he said very loudly, "You have BAT EYES?" and
that's been my name ever since. Thanks a lot oh Weird One!
Robert Foster - Class of '84

"Oral Robert" (For excessive talking)

Ward! You are the greatest. Thank you so much for pouring
your life into your students and caring about us. I will always
remember you! I am a college professor now. I use some of
your teaching approach with my students! Thanks for lifting
me up.

Peace, Robert "Oral Robert" Foster

PS - I was named Oral because of talking, it is true, but he
also liked this name for me because I tried to heal a girl in
class one day. Her infirmity, "she could not understand
metrics!" One day when Ward had explained volume
measurement to her once again and she still didn't get it, I
got up from the back row walked up to her, placed my hands
on her head and said in my best televangelist's voice, "Heal!
YYYEEESSS!"

Ward laughed at me and told me to leave her alone and get
back in the corner.
Jim Caldwell - Class of '78

Richard Kern - Class of '71

"Troublemaker"
Russ  Rischard  - Class of '78

"Rasslin' Retardo"
Jennifer "Spinning Jenny" Linden - Class of '88

A spinning jenny is another name for a spinning wheel and I
guess not a whole lot of people knew that so it was funny
that I did when he blessed me w/this name. Friends had fun
calling me "sit and spinning jenny". I mentioned being long
legged and received yet another nickname,
"Spinne", which
is German for spider. My 8 year old son Drew is
"Drool". My
2 year old son Nate's nickname is
"Nate the reprobate". A
reprobate is defined as a depraved, unprincipled individual.
He got this name for keeping me up at night. But it is very
special to me because Mr Ward was at the hospital the day
he was born and one of the first people to hold him. Think he
had the name ready for him then, just wanted to see if he
grew into it. My boyfriend during high school years (Greg
Maher) had the nickname
"Gentleman Friend" by Ward
since I was walked to class everyday by him. Many years
later, Greg and I married and he shortened Greg's name to
"G.F." Greg never even had him for a teacher and he still
got a nickname and Ward still remembers it, too. That is
amazing!!
Teishi Rogers - Class of 1980

"Mr. Rogers"

Kathy Rogers - Class of 1983

"Buck Rogers"
Whitney Childress - Class of '84

"Half-Whit"
Three people with one nickname - “Smelby”:

Lissa (Shelby) Clark - 1974

Kent Shelby – 1976

Murph Shelby – 1978

I guess Ward figured, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
Ruthie Cravello – ’70 (I think)

“Carvello”

Nancy Jones – ’71

“Nasty Jones”

Sherry Cross - '66 and Susan Cross – ’71

“Old Rugged Cross”
Keith Keirsey - Class of '77

"Curse's"
Jim Johnson - 1971

"Safeway"

Mine was "Safeway" because I worked
at.......you guessed it...Safeway at 11th &
Memorial, where Mr. Ward sometimes
shopped.
Alan Donaho - Class of '72

"Donahooo"

Mr. Ward called me "Donahooo", however,
another classmate,
Mark Romine, class of
'72, was always called
"BR2" (Bromine).

I've never forgotten Mr. Ward for a lot of
reasons but BR2 really stands out for me.
Roxann Davis - Class of '81

"Foxy Roxy"
Cheri (Chaney) Sinor
Class of '71

“Zaney”
Dana (Dearman) Shelton
Class of '71

“Dearwoman”
Dianne Story Trolinger
Class of '89

"Little Story Girl"
David Hubbs - Class of '65

"Howdy Doody"
Thomas Wright - Class of '77

"Gramps"

Never took chemistry, but felt like one
of your kids anyway. You adopted the
nickname Gramps for me after
Mark
Kuhn
and Tim Kincaid clued you in,
and signed the yearbook "beware of
smoke" after I always quizzed you
about the pipe at football games.

What a blessing to see this site and
think of 30 years ago, and your love
for teaching and your students.
Click here for an article from a 1985
Cardinal Tale Feather written by
James "Gilligan" Aydelott. It's about
Ward's nicknames for students.
Teresa McCoy
Class of '81

"McMuffin"
Gregg and Kelly (Strode) Bradshaw
Class of 1977

Gregg 'Badshaw' Bradshaw, and to
this day I am not sure why,
Kelly 'Smelly' Strode Bradshaw. Only
the great one, Weird Ward knows...

Greetings,

I signed the guestbook on the webpage.  But
I'd be honored to have my nickname posted
on the nickname page as well:

Alex Wilson, Class of 1989 :  "Smart Alex"

Thank you for the website.  I have been telling
people stories about my favorite teacher for
years, now I have proof that the FHC truly did
exist.  (Some people think that the photos in
my yearbooks are hoaxes.)

Trudi (Meyer) Logan Class of 1977

“Gertie”

Weird Ward gave me the nickname
“Gertie” because Trudi is usually a
variation Gertrude, as is Gertie.
Shortly afterwards, he watched a
movie named “Getting Gertie’s Garter”
so naturally he brought me a garter to
wear in class.
Max 'Big Mac' Sheffield
Class of '77
Debbie 'Daffy" Hines (Sheffield)
Class of '78
Thanks to my big mouth sister Jody, who
had Ward in '74, when I came into his class
in '75, she had told him my nickname from
jr high football was
“Cuddles”. Looking
back, I hated that name but after he used it
so many times I got immune to it and it
doesn’t bother me now. Ward made it
tolerable like he did learning chemistry!!

Randy “Cuddles” Cunningham
Class of '76
Sherrie "Skerrie" Adams
Class of 1981
Richard " Rick " Peterson class of 1977

My nickname was " stuntman " and I too sat
in the back of the class.
I was given this name because I would lean
back in my desk, and one day the desk feet
went out from under me causing me to fall
backwards. From then on I was known as
" Stuntman "
Well,  Mr. Ward gave me a nickname
very quickly.   It did not take long to
notice that large feature on my face...
that big nose!   so he promptly gave
me that great nickname...  "Hose Nose"
Then later in the year he he had a
funny thought during class one day..
and then I had a second nick-name.. it
really did not replace that first one.
"Cyrano"   was the second one...  so
did anyone else get two nick-names?
So of course during class whenever we
need a tube to do our experiments.. it
was really a hose!!!

We love you Mr. Ward.

Happy New Year!!

This is
Bad News Barnes from the
graduating
class of 1977.  I have been
teaching science for the past 20 years,
the last 12 at Carver Middle School.  I
often think of you and hope that I will
also inspire my students to go into the
field of science as you did for me.

You Rock!!
Barry Parks class of 1965

I was referred to as Weird Parks, no
particular reason, as I was usually
up to some hi-jinks and had many fine
adventures in Wards class, great
preparation for becoming a mad scientist.

"The Sleeping Bullet"
Karen "The Sleeping Bullet" Center
Class of '88
My nickname was "The Sleeping
Bullet" named so for delivering the
attendance bulletin daily and sleeping
through Chemistry. Oddly enough, I
never made the "bottom of the barrel".
I am from the class of '83. I was in
WW's class '81-'82. My nickname was
"Oh Well" If there was  a story behind
it, I never knew it. My guess is it came
from my last name.

Jeff O'Dell
Just wanted to add my name to the
list. My maiden name was Moren, so
"Moron" was awfully close. Guess
that's why Ward bestowed that one on
me.  He called me "Moron" recently at
one of his Panera get togethers, and it
made me feel good all over again. I'm
proud to have a Ward nickname!!!
He's the best!!!
Judy Moren Moore
Joplin, Missouri
Class of 1966
WOW – My Dad (Jim Payne - 1962
Alum, and student of Mr. Ward – Son
of James Payne - The Principle of East
Central, and Bernice Payne – Teacher
at East Central) just told me about this
site…and I thought I would add a few
more “nicknames” Mr. Ward had given
to me…

Considering my family history with East
Central I was an easy target….First
time around I was “The Inflictor” –
Yeah with the last name of Payne –
what else would you expect – He said I
inflicted too much pain….Second time
around – yes, don’t laugh, I took
Chemistry TWICE…was “Excruciating”,
because it was excruciating to have
me in class AGAIN….

In between there were a few more,
such as ….”Horrible”  “Pain in the….”  I
guess with a name like Payne it’s hard
to limit yourself.

Most definitely the most fun, caring,
and interesting teacher I have ever
had.  By the way – I think ELOM wore
my Grandpa’s belt and tie…..
