I'm so sorry that I didn't see the party notice in time to RSVP and attend today. It would have been great to be together with all of you to celebrate the wonderful teacher and man Mr. Ward was. Mr. Ward not only mastered the chemistry of the science world but also the chemistry of connecting with kids. He shared more than just his knowledge; he shared himself. His relationship with us didn't start at 8 and end at 3 with the final school bell; we were always on his mind. As a matter of fact, his nickname for me came from a weekend visit to the car wash when he noticed some car air fresheners that had some horoscope mascots on them. He proudly announced in class one day that he had finally thought of a name for me - Aries. He said the shape of the ram horns on the Aries freshener made him think of how the white streaks in my hair curved around my face so he bought the air freshener and presented it to me in class. From that point on, I became known as "Aries." I am reminded of so many more fun and funny times in his class as both his student and then as his aid. There was always such a competition to be his student aid because students actually wanted to be in his class again. His policy of "total ignorance" won me over the first day and has helped me so many times when I have found myself in a "teaching/training" role. Mr. Ward may not have had children to physically carry on his family name but there are multiple generations of children who will always carry the name of "Weird Ward" in their hearts and will share the lessons of his friendship with generations to come. I will cherish his friendship always and will not be surprised (or more pleased) than to find him waiting at the pearly gates to greet his students with a "Gads, you ape" followed by the blast of a fire extinguisher!

· Class of 1966 · Tulsa, Oklahoma

I was so sorry to hear of Mr. Ward's passing today. All of his "kids," his former students, will miss him and will always remember him. It takes a special teacher to create nicknames for all of his students AND to remember those students and their nicknames years later! He touched so many lives over the years. I will always remember his quirky sense of humor, his wry smile, and his ability to make high school chemistry interesting! With love, Sherry Price, "Old Rugged Cross"

Today you stepped through Heaven's Gate...we miss you and our hearts ache. Yet, we know Heaven gained by our loss and there is peace and joy as we celebrate a life abundantly well lived. Well lived because it was never about you but only to give your all to others...you lived for our successes our laughter and to inspire us to keep on when it was tough and to excel. I am so thankful God allowed me the priviledge and honor of being your student. I am even more grateful for being able to get the chance to say farewell ol' buddy and to hold your hand if only for a moment. Until that glorious day when .."I'll see you in the morning"...love you Mr. Ward so dearly and thank you for all that you have done to make our world, our lives better. You Weird One are a legend both in your own time and for all eternity!..Brady Cramp

You're the best teacher I ever had. I wish I'd paid more attention in your class because when I finally took college chemistry in 1991 I had a heck of a time figuring it all out! I'll never forget how you came to visit me in the hospital when I had ankle surgery...you're truly a good person. I remember "Little Willie" and "What Ho!" most of all...strange what the mind retains...

I was explaining to my wife all the fun the Mr. Ward's class was. I found this website and it brought back some great memories! I was surprised to look at the "Wardisms" and the first one listed was my contribution to the class: "Me Eats Peanut Butter" (Methane, Ethane, Propane, Butane). I remember Ward liking it. And after that I always tried to think of more.

All Hail Elom. Gads, did I just say that 22 years later? Little Willy was a chemist... The best years of my life... Those who don't know... The more you know, the more... Would someone please pass the bedpan.

Consuela Reinhart

· Class of 1986 · Kentucky

Wierd Ward bestowed me with the name "Strongheart", after the crappy dog food of the same name (wanting to be a vet and actually acheived that goal!) and of course it rhymed with "Reinhart." My favorite memory was of him making me sit by him,(making sure that I was not blowing up the lab), and the different chemicals he would have sprinkled on his desk and I would name them by smelling them. Amazing ! Have often thought of Weird Ward and his awesome teaching techniques. Learned more in his class that helped me thru college than any other. Best wishes Pat Ward. ELOM and You rule forever.

Ward, ol' buddy, how in the world are you? My wife is a science teacher, and every year she promises to give an A+ to any student or group who can present her with a "mole" of Chocolate Chip Cookies. Which I would be the beneficiary of if they could actually pull it off :) Still singing, and happy to say "howdy" to you. Pardon me while I get my Hydrox cookies and evaporated water. Take care! I just got off the Phone with another of your students, Jeff Stewart 77, and found out about this site. Brings back many good memories. Better than the yearbook. I made the mistake of telling one of my boys classmates about Ward and the nicknames. Now whenever I see that guy, I get to hear "Schnauzer" all over again.

Lloyd Wallisch

· Class of 1970 · Still in the Bunker Under the Rose Bowl

Losing Rick Schemet reminds me of so many other losses. Herewith, departed friends: "I Think Continually Of Those Who Were Truly Great" by Stephen Spender I think continually of those who were truly great. Who, from the womb, remembered the soul's history Through corridors of light where the hours are suns Endless and singing. Whose lovely ambition Was that their lips, still touched with fire, Should tell of the Spirit clothed from head to foot in song. And who hoarded from the Spring branches The desires falling across their bodies like blossoms. What is precious is never to forget The essential delight of the blood drawn from ageless springs Breaking through rocks in worlds before our earth. Never to deny its pleasure in the morning simple light Nor its grave evening demand for love. Never to allow gradually the traffic to smother With noise and fog the flowering of the spirit. Near the snow, near the sun, in the highest fields See how these names are fŠted by the waving grass And by the streamers of white cloud And whispers of wind in the listening sky. The names of those who in their lives fought for life Who wore at their hearts the fire's center. Born of the sun they traveled a short while towards the sun, And left the vivid air signed with their honor.

I am sad to report that we lost our EC '71 friend & classmate friend Rick Schemet Sunday, September 14th in a motorcycle accident. Rick was one of our Fellowship of Heathen Chemists Breakfast "regulars" - a prince of a guy with a big smile and a great heart. He will be missed very, very much.

"Closs Wotchley" Although I spelled it phonetically and probably not properly, this is what I remember most. I am a visual learner, I needed to see the process and the results and you showed them to me, as well as making us DO the procees to see the results!!!!!! I too have told many friends of you and your impact on students, I only hope that my children will have an instructor as memorable as you. I am no Dr., but what I gained from your class has helped in every entity of my life. God Bless you and take care. Maybe see you at the next Wannemacher Gun Show? ;)

Reading this website is awesome. So many familar names. Mr Ward you are the best teacher I ever had!!! As others have said no one believes the things that went on in class and we all seemed to learn inspite of it; more than just Chemistry too.!! Classes today need more teachers like you for sure. I absolutely love this website! So many people think I'm making up stories about my high school chemistry teacher when I tell them about FHC and Elom. Now I can point them to this website as proof. I'll be starting my 3rd year of pharmacy school in August, and I wish I had more teachers like Weird Ward! I know Brian "Wiz" Whisenhunt and I ("Ape-ula") drove him crazy, but we sure had a great time doing it. Rock on Weird Ward!!

Hello Ol' buddy! Great to hear you are doing well. My 16 year old daughter took Chemistry at Edmond North High School this year. I helped her study and all the memories came rushing back for me! Thanks for being such a great teacher. Dr. Hickey

Kevin Abbey (Dear Abbey)

· Class of 1988 · Norman, OK

Mr. Ward, as a kid you sometimes don't think of saying thank you because you don't realize what type of an impact an event or person has in your life. To make an understatement you have made an impact on many lives. I want to say thank you. I have told many stories of you to whomever wanted or didn't want to listen. One story that still makes me laugh is one day doing some experiment a student carrying a beaker filled with some liquid came to your desk to have some metal piece dropped into it. Once the metal piece was dropped in it starts boiling, in my mind pretty aggressively, and you yell "GADS, GET AWAY!!!" He set the beaker down on your desk and starts to run and duck which brought more yelling, which made me think we were in for some big explosion so I start ducking. Finally the kid clues in and takes the reacting beaker away from YOU. The scene still makes me laugh. I really thought we were in for a large boom. A Wardism that I still use today, "Beware of the drunks!". Again, Mr. Ward, Thank you.

I had the chance visit with Mr. Ward at the doctor's office this morning. I have been in education for many years and am currently superintendent of Berryhill Schools in Tulsa. I am constantly looking to employ teachers that are representative of the many fine qualities of Mr. Ward. Mr. Ward was one of my favorite teachers as well and he inspire me to pursue education as a career. It was so good to see him and it brought back so many wonderful memories. If he ever decides to come out of retirement, I'm sure I could find a place for him. Take care ole buddy.

Mr. Ward, The worlds Greatest Teacher you are indeed. Pat, the fact you taught Chemistry was purely a side bargain. What most of us recieved from you was a mentorship in life. Servant Leadership if you will before it was the current "buzz word". We were taught that it was ok to have fun but yet learn something as difficult and complex, for me anyway, as chemistry. This lesson in life from you has followed me all over the world, in other words; approach difficult concepts by breaking the task down but yet frame it with humor in a relaxed environment. This approach has worked while interfacing with a variety of cultures and coutries, from Saudi, Egypt, Israel to France, Germany and Italy. Passion about ones mission coupled with a sense of humor transcends all cutural boundries. Of course picking up the tab at the bar, except for the 5 years in Saudi as there are no bars there, doesn't hurt either. You get the point my friend, I tip my hat to you and all that you have relayed to me over 30 years ago. For the record, did the Cimmaron River really get it's name from the water not being able to boil...It just simmers on? I remember vividly you telling me this and I as well have relayed this "story" on all my travels, thank god no one ever argued that statement. From a chemist standpoint I sure as hell couldn't prove it, but you could, ;o). I plan to see you at one of those Panera Bread shin digs where I understand you are picking up the tab on a bagel eating contest, glad you have deep pockets ol' buddy, I have to float a loan just to drag my 4 kids out of there. You take care, big hug to you from this end and we'll be in touch. Lane

I was not the greatest Chem student, but you made learning it fun and interesting. I still use the "snowball" on my kids to this day. The blackboard quote that I remember: Gross Ignorance....144 sophmores. Thanks for being such an inspirational teacher! I wish there were more like you today!

When I said that I flunked Physics I did not mean that it was Mr. Ward's fault. I was an airhead then. It took me a few extra years to get my head on straight. Now that I have taught science (elementary) only do I really get it. Mr. Ward was a great teacher and always interesting to say the least.

I still have my FHC t-shirt and when my wife ran across it she asked "what in the world is this from ??!!" This led to some of the greatest stories as well as showing exactly how well I remembered Chemistry all due to the true "Great One", Mr. Pat Ward. Thank you Mr. Ward for being one of the good influences in my life by leading me to really appreciate the sciences (I now work at Johnson Space Center) as well as showing me a style of teaching that carried me through college.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, OL' BUDDY!! I hope you had a great day, and I'm sorry that I've had to miss the last few Panera get-togethers. I conducted some teacher training today, and I used you as an example (a good one). Just think: you used to be more than twice my age, but now the gap has narrowed. I'm no math genius, but if this trend continues, we should be the same age before you know it. See you soon.

Thoroughly enjoying the website and memories. Thanks so much to the webmonster. Mr. Ward; everyone's favorite teacher ever! Hope to see you soon at the 1977 ECHS reunion. I just have one question on all the reunion pictures on this website; other than the ever-young Mr. Ward and Lee Ann Barks, who are all the old people? Certainly not members of the class of '77, as we have not aged.

When my friends in MN didn't believe that my favorite teacher of all time was the one that called us "fools" and "heathens" every day, I started looking around for info on Mr. Ward. I was delighted to see this sight.

What Ho!! This website is great and it sure brought back some great memories of high school. Mr. Ward, I went through 13 years of school in Tulsa, and about 7 years worth of college and I can honestly say YOU ARE THE BEST TEACHER IN THE WORLD!!! If you could be cloned and sent to every students' classroom, problems in education would cease to exist. You made the world a better place. It was a privilege to be in your class, though you never gave me a nickname! So in behalf of the Rawlinson clan (Rise, Dana, Tawl Rawl, and Marmaduke) we salute You!!

Dear Mr. Ward, Hello! I just wanted to say that I have always admired you and your students from afar. I was on my own in high school and so had no guidance as to what classes were necessary for college. I chose not to take your class because other students said you were too difficult. The mistakes we make in youth by listening to peers can't be undone. I ended up having to teach myself chemistry in order to teach my children and I realized what a fascinating science it was and how I had missed the privelege of being under your tutelage. Thank you for being such a wonderful teacher. I was always envious of you and your students. While I regret having not been your student, I truly admire you and your students and all that you have accomplished in your lifetimes. I hope to see you when I come back to Oklahoma in 2007 for my high school reunion. I miss the "Red Dirt" of home. Is there a chemical explanation as to why the dirt is red? May God richly bless you all the days of your life. Trudy (Stadler) Espinoza

I've been working for Mr. Ward for several years. He's invited me to your breakfast meetings, and I will try to make a breakfast soon. I was just glancing back at the 1965 yearbook picture of some of us "athletes" in Coach Dyer's den when it struck me that the picture was taken by our yearbook photographer, Gary Dewey. Gary was nicknamed "F.B.I", short for "Flash Bulb Idiot". He wore that moniker with great pride. I do not believe that Mr. Ward gave him that nickname. I think it was coined by one of the coaches.

"Ein glückliches neues Jahr" to all of our former students! Note to the Weird One: Pat, if you're looking for a t-shirt, why not go with the WWE? I think it stands for Weird Ward & Elom. I'd get one myself if it had a picture of Stacy Keibler on it. Of course, it would have to be an Extra-Tall, to fit her all in. Speaking of dancing with the stars, how about those pictures of the two Pats (Holder and Ward) at the Christmas Dance? As I recall, the Frau and I were Mrs. and Mr. Claus the following year. Tschüss!

I had a very interesting and WEIRD conversation with Mr. Ward today. He had commented that I have just received the "Weirdest" call of the year. He proceeded to ask about our logo or if we had a shirt to sell with the logo on it. This was important to him because of the WW being his adopted initials. We are not in the business to sell shirts but you may visit our website to look at what we really do. www.ww-enterprises.com Well, I agreed...it was the weirdest call of the year but the kindest gentleman I had spoken to all year.

Just wanted to let Mr. Ward know that I am a product of his teaching without ever meeting him. My parents, Walter Faber c/o '74 and Becky Faber (Caldwell) c/o '77, both remember you vividly and share stories from time to time. I also sit under the teaching of Dr. Robert Foster, an E.C. alumni who has modeled his teaching after you...for which I am thankfully learning Greek with enjoyment. Dr. Foster is a friend of my parents and talks of his days in Mr. Ward's class with me often. The previous poster Jim Caldwell is a man I'm proud to call my uncle. Lots of people showed up for the Weird One's birthday celebration on Saturday, Oct. 21. We had coffee and birthday cake. It was a real hoot seeing how Weird Ward can remember absolutely EVERYONE'S name, year they graduated, and most everyone's nickname he gave them. Some of us decided that B.O.B. aka Dana LeMoine needs to make a link so we can all tell about how we got our nicknames. Kudos to the "twisted sisters" for planning this and pulling it off. I know Ward was touched, and we all had a great time seeing him. Weird Ward's sister came to celebrate with us, and guess what...she's not weird at all! Hope I'm not repeating myself (my wife says I do it all the time.) Mr. Ward walked out of the storeroom. Another student and I pretended to disagree over the nature of a liquid in a test-tube I held. I said, "And I say it's not toxic," took a sip, then started coughing and convulsing. (It was, of course, water.) Mr. Ward rushed to my aid. "Gads! Wallisch, what have you done?" The resulting convulsions were pure laughter. At the time, we thought we were incredibly original and witty. In retrospect, just kiddie mundane and cruel. But, as one would expect, Mr. Ward laughed along with us. A few decades later, I realize the joke was on us.

I just saw the pictures posted from the 1965 yearbook. What a bunch of memories rushed into my head. I have the answers to some of the questions posted concerning the picture with the 10 guys in their letter jackets. First their names. Front row, let to right: Larry Hughes, Jerry Cedrone, Pat Pollock, Dale Pharris, Wayne Johnson, Craig Bills. Back row, left to right: Tom Carter, Robert Smith (me!), Al Marshall, Jimmy Smittle. A little side note - Dale Pharris was my best man when I married my high school sweetheart, Nina Putnam, in 1967. She is still my Sweetheart. The picture was taken in the den of (Clayton) Eddie Dyer, the head football coach. I remember the cups on the fireplace had names on them. They were momentos of Coach Dyer's.

I assured him that NO ONE was going to think that, and that we all loved him and his class and that it's a fun place for us all to share memories. Like, Old Number Nine, for example. Also, I saw on the classmates.com site that there was some talk of a 70th birthday party for WW, for Oct 2006. Lately though I have trended to heresy in praising the goddess Selene, the namesake of selenium. By Jove's Jowls! I also get daily use of the chants "perv nerts" and "Boyle's Law". Because of Weird Ward I have gone over to the Dark Syde.

Good to see a lot of '78 disco era grads on the site still alive and kicking, including my OSU roomate Mickey Moose and neighbor Rasslin Retardo. Special hellos to McFeely and BatEyes. We need to locate Edith the Dingbat. My big sister Smelby #1 ('74) told me about the site this morning. I will pass it on to my big brother Smelby #2('76)as well. Best Regards to all, particularly to the Master himself! Murph ("Smelby #3 ECHS '78) Shelby.

Hey there Mr. Ward! So good to hear that one of the all-time great teachers is still doing well! I regret to inform you that I've put very little of what I learned from your class to use in my career field (I'm in my 25th year as an Air Traffic Controller), but rest assured that the "weirdness" has been forever imbedded in my memory and enjoyed again as I read these comments from others. My best to you and all my FHC brothers and sisters!

Mr. Ward was the best teacher I ever encountered. My daughter is in H.S. Chemistry and I am teaching her "ate-ic/ite-us" and VA/NA+VB/NB" and MeEat Peanut Butter (MethaneEthanePropaneButane) and the other mnemonics that Mr. Ward taught. I must have learned something, I am currently a partner in a Chemical Engineering firm.

This AM, my wife and I had rare honour and high distinction of dining at breakfast with #1 LeMoine and Special Guest, plus the Webmaster of Tulsa's SuperCoolest Webpage, plus DRUM ROLL HERE, FANFARE OF TRUMPETS, and a Great Big GADS!, as great a teacher and human being as one might ever meet, His Weirdness Himself, Mr. Ward! All of you fellow Space Cadets and Junior BirdMen out there, check in please. Mr. Ward has aged like one of those fine wines they sell at auction for a million dollars a bottle. Even funnier and wiser and kinder than one recalls. We'll keep the Bunsen burning!

How the world are ya? I was so excited to find this web page - in honor of the great Weird Ward. Please write me if you get a chance and let me know what is going on in your world these days. I have recently become a partner in a medical research company - maybe I can find the right study for retired chemistry instructors!! HA! Please write - I'll so enjoy hearing from you. Debbie...I mean "McFeelie"! :)

I am thrilled that nearly 20 years later I still get to talk and spend time with a truly amazing teacher and friend. What an honor to be chosen as FHC poster child, and it was only fitting that my first child was born on Oct. 23, Elom's birthday. In response to Richard Kern (1971), I remember the "seemingly inexhaustible supply of daily Bartlett's (Ward's) Quotations on the blackboard". I wrote many of them on the cover of my Chemistry spiral. I can hardly wait to share my collection of Ward memorabilia. Hail Elom!

A Porsche memory. During the year I really discovered chemistry (1967-8), the first bomb threat in TPS history was phoned in to ECHS. (Turned out to be a student fearing a test, who made the call from those pay phones near the Admin. Offices and then bragged about it.) All were evacuated, then it started to rain, and we were directed into auditorium. Upon which, a fire marshal stopped us ("There may be a bomb in there!") and sent everyone back outside. Everyone was looking for a car. Mr. Ward saw me and said "Gads Wallisch get in the car." It was the first time I'd ever been in a Porsche, and it was the Great Ward's long-nosed Porsche (the envy of every auto-oriented ECHSer). Wish I could recall what we talked about. Mr. Ward has the essence of all great teachers: they inspire you, no matter what you want to learn, to have the passion to always want to learn, and to always be open to learning everything.

I'll never forget getting a strip of something (magnesium, maybe?)too close to the bunsen burner--It made such a nice glow! Mr. Ward just looked at me and said "Schultzie, what do you think you're doing?"--I didn't have a clue. This wonderful man survived 3 of us "Schultzies" and I think of him every time I say "Go ahead on".I've been a teacher for 30 years and I can fully appreciate what he went through.Thank you for your sense of humor,Mr. Ward!!!!

Thanks to all involved in the great website. I still quote the "Little Willie" poem to any that will listen: Little Willie was a chemist. Little Willie is no more. What he thought was H2O was H2SO4. This needs to be in the website somewhere.

Hope you and all from ECHS are well.

Mr. Ward was such a beloved teacher! I can remember Dean and I going to the ECHS basketball games and when Mr. Ward walked in he got a bigger ovation than the basketball team. A chant always went up, "Weird Ward!", "Weird Ward!" Don't want to burst anyone's bubble, but they don't make them like him anymore!
